From a value standpoint, the larger a tree is the more important it is to understand how quality affects the value.    Timber stands with a higher proportion of veneer and saw timber will sell for much more than one that contains mostly pulpwood and a small amount of saw timber.

Timber sales on small acreage do not necessarily mean small harvestable volumes and conversely, large acreage timber sales do not necessarily mean that the volume to be harvested is high. It is quite possible for example, that a 20 acre clear-cut will contain as much or more wood for sale than a selective cut or light thinning on a tract of 35 or 40 acres.
